The Celtic Flame held great significance for the Celts and served a number of functions. They believed that by purifying the air in the home it was a means of protection from malign influences and also ensured the fertility of the community, animals and crops. The hearthstone was the focal point for heat and light in the house and many prayers are associated with the tending of the flame, which was kept burning throughout the year.
